Sounders with Liz
Today was so fun! My really good friend Liz Rujoni had an extra ticket to the Sounders/Rapids game for today! I was a bit late as usual and luckily Liz knows me so she wasn’t too upset! As we walked to our seats I was blown away at how close they were, Row H! What was awesome about our seats, is I could run down to the front and shoot photos. I always look into press booths to see how many people are shooting Nikon and how many are shooting Canon. As I was looking into the press booth I noticed a familiar looking fellow with a huge 400mm lens on a monopod and lots of cameras strapped around his neck. I said to myself, “man that really looks like Connor…” Connor doesn’t shoot sports or have a 400MM lens so I just figured it was a look-a-like.
After halftime the Sounders offense was coming towards the goal closest to us. This is good news, because my longest focal length is 50mm and even in the front row, the field is pretty far. (I need the 70-200 vr2!) The Sounders were down 2-1 at the beginning of the 2nd half but quickly tied up the score 2-2. I wasn’t quite ready for the shot and unfortunately the guys ran to the other corner to celebrate. Not too long after that another goal went in and again my chance to get a celebration shot was thwarted as they ran to the corner opposite of me.
I told Liz they were going to score again and run into the corner to celebrate! Well just as I predicted, Mauro Rosales broke away and put the Sounders up 4-2. As Rosales ran into the corner closest to me I sprinted down the 7 rows to the front and snagged the shot in the top right. The bottom photo is a photo stitch I did right at the end of the game. Getting panoramic shots when people are moving is really hard and took a lot of work to make work but its a pretty epic shot. I snagged a photo of Liz, which ended up being harder to get than the celebration shot! It was more that she was refusing to let me take a photo and I told her I wouldn’t use the shot for the 365 but I lied…. The shot of the goal isn’t really one I would usually post but I love the foreground bokeh!
When I got home I looked on Facebook and saw that Connor Surdi, the guy I thought I had seen was actually at the Sounders game too! So funny, in a crowd of 37,000 people I see the guy who inspired my 365 and on a day where we were shooting the same thing! Check out his WAY better shots at http://www.flickr.com/photos/connorsurdi/
